The Man Who Allegedly Shot Joe McKnight Was Released Without Being Charged

The man who allegedly shot former USC star Joe McKnight to death has been released from custody with no charges filed, according to TMZ.

Thursday, tragedy struck the football world when it was reported that former USC star Joe McKnight, who had a short stint in the NFL, had been murdered following an altercation in Terrytown, Louisiana. Friday, we're learning that the man who allegedly shot McKnight, a 54-year-old white male named Ronald Gasser, has been released with no charges filed.

Here's more from TMZ:

We spoke with a rep who tells us 54-year-old Ronald Gasser -- a white male -- was questioned and released "sometime overnight" after officials believed they had no reason to hold him any longer.

The Sheriff's Dept. tells us ... Gasser "definitely" shot the ex-NFL running back -- but there are "questions about the circumstances surrounding what led up to it."

It's unclear whether the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department plans to make any more information available.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with McKnight's family and friends during this tough time.
