Michigan-Florida State Sets ESPN Orange Bowl Viewership Record

Friday night's Orange Bowl had a massive TV audience.

The Orange Bowl usually posts great ratings every year. This year, though, it set a new ESPN Orange Bowl record. Of course, the matchup being between elite Power 5 programs Michigan and Florida State, doesn't hurt.

According to ESPN, this year's Capital One Orange Bowl delivered a total live audience (TV + streaming) of 11,704,000 viewers. That's the second-largest TV audience for a non-semifinal New Year's Six Bowl game since the inception of the College Football Playoff.

While the TV audience came in second, the streaming average minute audience (243,000 viewers) set a new record for non-Semifinal New Year’s Six games.

The Florida State-Michigan matchup was the second-most watched college football game of the season on any network. The Michigan-Ohio State overtime thriller accounted for a slightly larger audience.

Florida State came from behind in the final minutes to defeat Michigan by a final score of 33-32. The Wolverines made it interesting, but a late drive stalled and the Seminoles hung on to win.
