Montana Western Football Player Killed In House Fire

Mark "M.J." Simkins Jr., a senior safety for Montana Western, was tragically killed in a house fire early this morning.

According to NBC Montana, Simkins was asleep when his teammates arrived at the house, where a fire had started in another room. They pulled him out of the house at around 12:30 a.m., but he was pronounced dead at the hospital around 3 a.m. this morning.

The roommates called 911 at approximately 12:30 a.m., pulled Simkins from the house and began administering CPR, Morast said.

Police were the first to arrive to the scene, and continued to administer CPR as fire crews arrived, Morast said.

Chief Morast said investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but they believe it was accidental.

Simkins was a Dillon, Montana native, was set to enter his senior year at Montana Western, which competes in the Frontier Conference at the NAIA level. Our thoughts go out to his family, and the Montana Western community.
