History Suggests One Of These 7 Teams Will Win The National Title
Ahead of the 2019 college football season, the Associated Press has released its Top 25 preseason ranking. While those rankings are subject to change throughout the season, a closer look at the poll seems to indicate who the real national title contenders are.
According to Brett McMurphy of Stadium, the college football national title winner has been a preseason top 7 almost every year since 2004. The two exceptions were the 2010 Auburn Tigers and the 2013 Florida State Seminoles.
But if the top 7 trend continues in 2019, that means we can whittle down the list of real contenders significantly.
As of the preseason poll release, here is the top 7 for the 2019 season:
- Clemson
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Oklahoma
- Ohio State
- LSU
- Michigan
Each of those top five teams has appeared in the College Football Playoff at least once since the tournament's inception. Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State are four of the only five teams to play in the CFP National Championship Game.
Meanwhile, LSU and Michigan have been knocking at the door in their conferences but unable to break through. But any slip-ups by Alabama and Ohio State respectively would give those two teams a window to get into the CFP.
Are these seven teams all the most likely to win the national title in 2019?
