Notre Dame crushed Syracuse on Saturday, and for the first time in the College Football Playoff era, the Fighting Irish have a chance at finishing the season with a perfect 12-0 mark. But what if they don't - are they out of the Playoff hunt?

According to FiveThirtyEight, maybe not. Notre Dame still has rival USC next week, and while the Trojans aren't great this year, anything is possible in a rivalry game. So what happens if the Fighting Irish lose?

If Notre Dame wins, FiveThirtyEight's playoff predictor gives the Fighting Irish an 88-percent chance of making the Playoff - which seems low. If they lose, they still have a 25-percent chance.

Of course that could change slightly by the end of today's action, but you get the idea. If Notre Dame wins, they're almost a lock to be in. If they lose, all hope isn't lost, but they'd need help.

FiveThirtyEight gives Notre Dame a 79-percent chance of beating USC. Check it out:

Notre Dame, at the moment, is the No. 3 team in the country. The Fighting Irish will likely retain that spot on Tuesday night.

Right now, they'd line up against Clemson in one of the national semifinal games. We'll see how it shakes out.
