Ryan Day Has 4-Word Update On Ohio State's Quarterback Battle

Ohio State will have a new starting quarterback for the 2025 season since Will Howard is off to the NFL

Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz, and Tavien St. Clair are battling it out for the starting quarterback position, but only one of them will win the job when Ohio State starts its national title defense against Texas on August 30.

Spring practice doesn't begin for another 10 days, and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day wants everyone to know that the quarterback battle is far from over.

"Long way to go," Day said, via Eleven Warriors. "Don't have any evaluation to go with now. But it's gonna be a big spring for those guys."

All three will be trying to outduel one another. Day will likely give starting reps to all of them to see what they can do.

Sayin has a lot of hype around him for the battle since he was a five-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports composite rankings. He was the top quarterback recruit in the nation and the sixth-best overall recruit.

Like Sayin, St. Clair was also a five-star recruit, but he was in Ohio State's 2025 recruiting class. He was the third-best quarterback recruit in the nation and the seventh-best overall recruit.

Kienholz played a little bit for OSU during the 2023 season, compiling 111 yards through the air, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. This will be a great battle to watch over the spring before the team reconvenes for fall camp later in the year.

Day doesn't appear to be in any rush to name a starting quarterback since there's still a little over five months to go until the season opener.

Ohio State won its first national title in a decade this past season, beating Notre Dame in the National Championship Game.
