Ohio State Coach Ryan Day Received Pay Increase Before Season
Ryan Day and his Ohio State staff received raises entering the 2023 football season.
Via The Columbus Dispatch, the university released a memo from athletic director Gene Smith dated May 1. Day's salary increased by 5.25 percent.
Smith confirmed to ABC's Clay Hall that Day is now earning over $10 million.
On top of $9.96 million in guaranteed compensation, Day is in line for a $250,000 retention bonus if he remains with the program through January.
Day will receive a $2 million base salary with $5.24 million in media payments and a $1.25 million deal with Nike.
As noted by Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors, other staffers also received raises. The biggest increase went to offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, whose salary climbed from $950,000 to $1.6 million
The season didn't end the way Day and Buckeyes fans hoped. After starting 11-0, Ohio State got throttled by Michigan at home.
Ohio State still made the College Football Playoff, where the Big Ten powerhouse lost a 42-41 heartbreaker to Georgia.
Day has improved his career record to 48-6 after leading the Buckeyes to a 3-0 start. He appears to have joined four other college coaches (Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Dabo Swinney, and Lincoln Riley) making at least $10 million this season.
The Buckeyes face their biggest challenge yet when playing No. 9 Notre Dame this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
