The Buckeyes are the country’s second-best team per the FPI.
Alabama and Clemson are basically universally thought to be the two best teams in college football this season.
The Crimson Tide and the Tigers are a clear No. 1 and No. 2 in both of the top 25 polls.
ESPN’s computer thinks differently, though.
According to the Football Power Index, Alabama is clearly the No. 1 team in the country. However, Clemson is not the No. 2 team.
Ohio State is.
Here’s the FPI’s top five:
|RK||TEAM||W-L||PROJ W-L||WIN OUT%||CONF WIN%||REM SOS RK||FPI|
|1||Alabama, SEC||6-0||12.1 – 0.7||44.4||61.5||51||30.4|
|2||OSU, Big Ten||5-1||11.0 – 1.8||39.5||55.3||28||29.1|
|3||Clemson, ACC||6-0||11.7 – 1.0||28.7||54.6||33||24.1|
|4||Penn State, Big Ten||6-0||11.0 – 1.2||9.4||14.3||48||23.6|
|5||Washington, Pac-12||6-0||11.5 – 1.2||22.5||50.5||9||23.1|
There’s a pretty sizable drop-off from Ohio State to Clemson – a difference of five FPI points.
The FPI is also more confident in Ohio State both winning out and winning its conference.
