The Volunteers might be looking for a new coach soon.
Chip Kelly has been labeled as the favorite to land the Tennessee head coaching job if it opens up, according to the sportsbooks.
With the Volunteers sputtering under Butch Jones, BetOnline has the odds of Tennessee hiring Kelly at +325. You can view the full odds here.
Paul Finebaum says he’s talked to Kelly about the possibility of landing at Tennessee. They both work at ESPN, after all.
“It’s an awkward kabuki dance every Sunday morning about 7:15 when I bump into him,” Finebaum said on WJOX 94.5 FM today, “because I have the same response wherever I have previously been, I say ‘Chip, I was in Knoxville yesterday, saw a lot of signs with your name on it. Anything new?’ He says, ‘Haven’t gotten a call yet.’
“I mean, I’ve talked to him. I don’t want to speak for him because I don’t know him that well… I think he clearly wants to coach. He’s up there (at ESPN) studying college football, and I do believe he will be back very quickly.”
Kelly is, at least statistically, by far the most-successful head coach currently without a job. He went 46-7 leading Oregon’s program from 2009-12.
