All of the backlash may have had an effect.
In the hours after it was first reported that Tennessee was working to finalize a deal with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, all hell broke loose.
Fans protested and politicians criticized the decision as the anti-Schiano sentiment reached a fever pitch. Most of the resistance stemmed from questions about his ability to succeed at UT, while some of it seemed to be about an allegation about his time at Penn State while Jerry Sandusky was there.
Either way, it looks like the uproar worked. According to Trey Wallace of the Ultimate SEC Show, Schiano will not be hired by the Vols.
Greg Schiano will not be the Head Coach at Tennessee. It’s done.

Assuming this is true, it is unclear where Tennessee will turn next.
What is clear is that they botched this process up royally.
