Notre Dame is reportedly finalizing a deal to hire Mike Elko as the team's defensive coordinator.
Notre Dame is reportedly set to hire Wake Forest defensive coordinator Mike Elko to the same position. According to Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel, Elko is expected to sign a multi-year deal with the Irish.
Elko spent the past three seasons as the Demon Deacons defensive coordinator. Under Elko this year, Wake Forest boasted the No. 20 scoring defense in the country while going 6-6 on the year. Despite having the nation's No. 121 offense, Elko's defense held up to its end of the bargain, leading the team to its first bowl since 2011.
Notre Dame's defense was clearly the weakest part of its team this year. The Irish fired Brian VanGorder after just four games and promoted Greg Hudson to interim coordinator. Hudson was considered, at the time, as a permanent candidate.
Brian Kelly's Fighting Irish squad finished the year at 4-8 and missed out on a bowl game for the first time since 2009.
