Scott Frost Asked If Adrian Martinez Will Return For 2022 Season
Nebraska head coach Scott Frost and quarterback Adrian Martinez have been tied at the hip since 2018. But with Martinez in his senior year, Frost is being asked if he could return for a fifth.
Appearing on Husker Sports Nightly, Frost said that he's been talking to Martinez about possibly returning. Frost pointed out that if Martinez does return, there will be new coaches around him. Ultimately, the decision will likely come right after the regular season.
“Been having (conversations) for a long time and we’ll continue to have them,” Frost said, via Saturday Tradition. “I think we can still get a lot better around him. Obviously, if he’s back he’s going to have a new coach and some new ideas. We’ll figure that out in about nine days.”
Martinez has started all but a handful of games for the Huskers since his freshman season. But despite playing fairly well, he hasn't been able to lead Nebraska to a bowl game.
Adrian Martinez ranks second behind Tommy Armstrong on Nebraska's all-time passing yardage list. He's tied for fourth in passing touchdowns with 44 and ranks seventh in rushing touchdowns.
Suffice it to say, Scott Frost will have a hard time replacing a player as productive as Martinez.
Frost has already been confirmed as the head coach of Nebraska to start the 2022 season. It would probably be a lot easier for him if he could go into that critical season with a familiar face under center.
But if Martinez chooses to enter the transfer portal and play elsewhere, it would be hard to begrudge him. Martinez could start for about half of FBS - and a good number of Power Five schools too.
