Shelley Meyer Was "Heartened" By This Depressing Urban Meyer Photo - Here's Why

No college football image has gone more viral than the one captured in the bowels of Lucas Oil Stadium after the Big Ten Championship Game in 2013.

The image: A depressed Urban Meyer eating pizza (Papa John's, I think) after Ohio State's loss to Michigan State in the league's title game. It was Meyer's first loss as the Buckeyes' head coach - a loss that dropped OSU out of national title contention.

The photo/GIFs were retweeted and liked an insane amount of times. They're often re-shared whenever something depressing happens to Ohio State football now.

Urban Meyer's wife, Shelley, recently revealed that she was "heartened" by one aspect of the photo. She spoke to Seth Davis for his new book, "Getting to Us: How Great Coaches Make Great Teams."

Cleveland.com's Bill Livingston has the details from the book:

A photo of the despondent coach, eating a slice of cold pizza in the basement of Lucas Oil Stadium after an upset loss to Michigan State in the 2013 Big Ten Championship Game, was widely interpreted as a portrait of despair. The loss cost the Buckeyes a shot at the national championship.

Meyer's wife, Shelley, however, was heartened. "She saw he was eating," writes Davis.

Meyer admitted that he struggled dealing with balancing his job and his personal life during his time at Florida. He wanted to win so badly that he would put everything else to the side - including his personal health.

Balance is something Meyer has gotten much better at since arriving at Ohio State. He's likely going to be at OSU for a while longer, too.

Meyer said on National Signing Day that he would soon be signing a contract extension. Ohio State AD Gene Smith confirmed that one was in the works.
