College football season is only three months away. It is time to start looking ahead to what might be in store in 2019.
Every season, there are teams that surprise us and outperform preseason expectations. On the flip side, there are also squads that enter the fall with high hopes and fall short.
Sports Illustrated has named five teams that could “regress” in 2019 after strong 2018 seasons. A couple of these teams are likely to be ranked in the preseason top 10.
The five schools SI picked are:
- Notre Dame
- West Virginia
Texas and Notre Dame are the two programs that figure to be highly-ranked in the preseason. In fact, the Sporting News picked the Longhorns to reach the College Football Playoff.
However, Tom Herman’s team loses a ton of production, particularly on defense. As for the Fighting Irish, well, they will be good this fall, but anything short of another perfect regular season would technically be regression.
Considering Notre Dame must play Georgia, Michigan, Louisville and Stanford on the road, the odds of the Irish going 12-0 are slim. Meanwhile, Northwestern is unlikely to reach the Big Ten title game again, and they’ll be breaking in a new quarterback, just like West Virginia.
Can Kentucky win 10 games again after doing so for just the third time ever last season? It will be a tough task with Georgia and Florida looking like the top two teams in the SEC East.
