Two days before a meeting with USC, Stanford star quarterback KJ Costello has been declared out due to injury, the Cardinal announced.
Costello had been listed as “questionable” throughout the week. He left Stanford’s win over Northwestern last week after taking a hit to the head.
Before exiting, Costello had been 16-for-20 for 152 yards. He was replaced by Davis Mills, who completed 7-of-14 passes for 81 yards.
Mills will make his first career start on Saturday against the Trojans, who will be starting true freshman Kedon Slovis after JT Daniels suffered a season-ending knee injury in last week’s opener.

Mills doesn’t have much experience–prior to last week, he had only attempted two career passes–but he was a five-star recruit and the top-rated Pro-Style passer in the 2017 class. We’ll see how long the job is his.
Stanford and USC will kick off at 10:30 p.m. ET Saturday night.
ESPN will broadcast the game from Los Angeles.
