Tennessee has struggled on offense all season, and Friday, a report suggests the coaching staff is going to make a big change ahead of Saturday’s game against Georgia. True freshman Brian Maurer is reportedly going to start at quarterback for the Vols.
Maurer will replace junior Jarrett Guarantano, who has been starting for the program since mid-2017. ESPN’s Chris Low was the first to report the news.
Guarantano has thrown for 753 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions on the year. Against Florida, he was 10-of-17 for 124 yards with two interceptions.
The timing of the move seems a bit odd, but regardless, it’s clear that Guarantano wasn’t cutting it as the team’s starter.
Tennessee is off to a 1-3 start this year with losses to Georgia State, BYU and Florida. The team’s lone win came over Chattanooga.
Maurer saw a few snaps against Chattanooga and played a bit more against Florida. He’s 4-of-11 for 44 yards with an interception on the season.
Georgia, the No. 3 ranked team in the nation, is a heavy favorite in the contest. Maurer is going to have his hands full in his first collegiate start.
The Vols and the Bulldogs will kick off at 7:00 PM ET.
