The Big Ten entered the 2018 college football regular season labeled one of the top two conferences in the country. Some analysts were pegging the Big Ten as the country's best conference (yes, above the vaunted SEC).
"Amway Coaches Poll shows the Big Ten is new conference king in college football," wrote USA TODAY before the start of the season.
It wasn't a crazy thought. The Big Ten had five teams ranked inside the top 15 to start the 2018 season (Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Michigan).
The Big Ten has already taken a major step backward, though. Three of those five teams have already lost a game. And today was just a disaster.
The following Big Ten teams lost today:
- No. 6 Wisconsin
Those losses came to BYU, Kansas, Temple, Troy and USF. Yikes.
"Wisconsin loses to BYU. Michigan State loses to Arizona State. Notre Dame dominates Michigan. Nebraska is 0-2 and Purdue is 0-2 as well. So yeah, I think that whole "the Big Ten is unquestionably the best conference in college football" narrative is officially dead," tweeted Aaron Torres.
It's a long season, of course, but yeah, that's probably fair.
The Big Ten can still finish Week 3 on a high note, though. Ohio State is set to take on TCU in a primetime game on ABC.
