Update On Ohio State's Backup Quarterback Competition

The battle for OSU's No. 2 spot on the depth chart is a serious one.

J.T. Barrett is Ohio State's starting quarterback. That's locked up.

The battle for the Buckeyes' backup quarterback spot is ongoing, though.

Redshirt sophomore Joe Burrow and redshirt freshman Dwyane Haskins are competing for the No. 2 spot on Ohio State's quarterback depth chart. Both played well on Saturday in OSU's spring game.

Burrow was believed to be leading the competition heading into the spring, but Meyer was less clear about the battle after the spring game.

“I want to watch the film and have conversations with our coaches,” Meyer told reporters. “We haven’t had that yet. I know it is very close, but I’m not prepared to say who is 2, who is 3, et cetera, yet.”

Burrow played well in backup duty in 2016 and Haskins was one of the top quarterback recruits in the country coming out of high school.

Behind those two is Tate Martell, a true freshman and perhaps the most-hyped QB recruit Ohio State has had since Terrelle Pryor.

And while this year's backup quarterback competition is intense, just wait for the starting quarterback battle in 2018.
