Urban Meyer very much enjoyed beating his rivals during his time as a college football head coach. He went 7-0 against Michigan during his tenure at Ohio State, after all.
The three-time national title winner might be out of coaching – for now, anyway – but he still has a rival.
FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff, led by Meyer, is competing directly for viewers with ESPN’s College GameDay, which has dominated the pregame market for decades. As Awful Announcing points out, FOX is starting to make progress in that battle, and Meyer is a big reason for that.
Meyer doesn’t shy from his new “rivalry,” either.
Mike Hall of Big Net Network recently spoke with Meyer about his first year as a full-time analyst for FOX. Meyer took a not-so-subtle shot at College GameDay.
“I had fun – turns out folks wanna talk about football, they don’t want to see jumpin’ in lakes or goin on rollercoasters,” Meyer said.
Just interviewed Urban Meyer. At one point talked about this year doing tv, he says "I had fun – turns out folks wanna talk about football, they don't want to see jumpin' in lakes or goin on rollercoasters"
…I feel I may know what he was alluding to.
The man is competitive.

It’s not difficult to imagine what Meyer was talking about here…

FOX should continue to make progress in its battle with ESPN in the years to come. The big question for the network’s pregame show, of course, has to do with Meyer. How much longer will he choose to remain on TV and away from the sideline?
Meyer has been linked to potential openings at USC and with the Dallas Cowboys. Eventually, he could leave his TV role and return to coaching.

For now, though, FOX is very much enjoying the benefits that come with having Meyer in an analyst role. He seems to be enjoying it, too.
