Urban Meyer Thinks Six Teams Could Still Win The National Championship
As many as eight teams remain alive in the College Football Playoff hunt heading into the Power Five conference championship games. Urban Meyer believes most of them can win it all if given a chance.
While discussing Michigan onUrban's Take with Tim May, the former head coach said he still sees multiple teams as legitimate contenders to take home the national title.
"I think this is as much parity as you've ever seen in the last 20 years," Meyer said. "Any team can win it. There's, I think, still five, six [teams]. I think Ohio State can still win it. I don't know if they'll get in, but the differential between the best team and the sixth team right now is [pinches fingers close together]."
It's unclear which playoff contenders he's leaving out after the Big Ten rivals. Georgia, Alabama, Washington, Oregon, Florida State, and Texas could each feasibly garner a playoff spot.
However, Meyer left Ann Arbor impressed by his former foe. The former Buckeyes national champion suggested there's "something special" brewing in Michigan after defeating Ohio State without Jim Harbaugh.
"Give credit where credit's due," Meyer said. "Do I think they can win it all? I do."
The oddsmakers don't entirely agree with Meyer's framing of a wide-open field.
Michigan and Georgia are co-favorites to win the national championship at +185 on FanDuel Sportsbook, and the Bulldogs' line could shrink if they secure a CFP spot by beating the Crimson Tide for the SEC crown. After those schools, Oregon (+500), Texas (+1000), Alabama (+1200), and Washington (+2500) are more distant candidates.
Meyer doesn't think any program is far ahead of the pack. Everyone could witness some interesting conference title clashes and some close playoff matchups if he's right.
