With the 2020 NCAA Tournament canceled, the 2019-20 college basketball campaign is essentially over. As a result, we get to start looking forward to the 2021 NCAA Tournament a little bit early.
According to BetOnline.ag, two teams have emerged as early favorites for the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Reigning national champion Virginia and WCC titan Gonzaga have both been given top odds at +900. In a narrow third are the Kansas Jayhawks.
Gonzaga is coming off yet another regular season and tournament title in the WCC. The Bulldogs were going to be among the favorites for the 2020 tournament had it been played. Several of their top players have at least one more year of eligibility, and they have a strong recruiting class coming in.
Virginia had a bit of a down year compared to what we’ve become accustomed too, going 23-7 overall with a 15-5 conference record. But Tony Bennett’s team still finished as the second seed in the ACC Tournament, and looked primed to make another strong run. Much like Gonzaga, Virginia also has a strong recruiting class coming in later this year.
Of course, we can’t at all discount the NCAA blue bloods like Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, or even North Carolina. All of those teams are poised to put together incredible classes that could immediately change the balance of power in college basketball.
But for now, we have to settle for some super-early projections about the coming season.
Who do you think should be the favorite in the 2021 NCAA Tournament?
