ESPN’s college basketball BPI rankings have been updated, and there is a change at the top. Virginia is no longer No. 1.
The Cavaliers lost to Duke yesterday, their second defeat at the hands of the Blue Devils this season. That drops them from the top spot last week to No. 3 this week.
Interestingly, Duke stayed at No. 2 even after beating UVA. Previously third-ranked Gonzaga leapfrogged the Blue Devils to take over the No. 1 ranking.
There was some more shuffling in the top 10 as well, as Virginia Tech was knocked off by Clemson.
Here is the newest ESPN BPI top 10:
- Michigan State
- North Carolina
- Virginia Tech

As you can tell, they look a bit different than the AP and Coaches Polls will look when they are released tomorrow.
According to ESPN, the BPI is “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward. BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Strength of Record (SOR) is a measure of team accomplishment based on how difficult a team’s W-L record is to achieve.”
