George Washington University finally announced its new nickname on Wednesday.

The school, which had been aiming to "retire" Colonials for some time due to student pressure, has decided on the Revolutionaries as its new moniker.

"This is an exciting day for the George Washington University Revolutionaries," GWU President Mark S. Wrighton said in a press release. "I am very grateful for the active engagement of our community throughout the development of the new moniker. This process was truly driven by our students, faculty, staff and alumni, and the result is a moniker that broadly reflects our community—and our distinguished and distinguishable GW spirit."

Not everyone shares Wrighton's enthusiasm for the switch though.

"Minutemen, Continentals, they were all options way better than this," said one commenter, who later recognized that Minutemen is already used by UMass.

"This sucks. It was a sick name," another commenter said.

"Why did they have to retire the name?" a third person asked.

"We truly are the softest country in the world," another person lamented.

"I'm all for the name change, but this just seems lame. Go with hippos, or blue fog, or anything else that is easier to anthropomorphize and isn't 6 syllables," a fifth person chimed in.

"A GW president bought a bronze statue of a hippo but his wife hated it. so he made a plaque with a fake story about George watching hippos in the Potomac and put it on campus. we rub it during finals for good luck. but market research reacted negatively to GW Hippos. cowards," argued one alum.

My opinion: Revolutionaries is a little too long, but when shortened to Revs, it's not bad.

There were probably some better and more efficient options though.
