The idea of the former Illinois head coach joining Indiana's staff is being tossed around.
John Groce was reportedly a candidate for the Dayton head coaching job, but the Flyers opted to hire former Alabama and VCU head coach Anthony Grant instead.
Where does this leave Groce's coaching status?
According to some unconfirmed reports and some serious speculation on social media, perhaps as an assistant coach at a Big Ten school.
The idea of the recently-fired Illinois head coach joining Archie Miller's staff at Indiana might be more than just a rumor.
From the Herald & Review:
If Dayton doesn’t work out, Groce has other options.
One could be as an assistant at Indiana for Archie Miller. Groce is an Indiana native, he’s recruited that state extensively and when he got a commitment from current shooting guard Jalen Coleman-Lands, it was the first Indiana prep star to commit to Illinois since Scott Haffner in 1984.
Groce has a strong relationship with La Lumiere Prep School in LaPorte, Ind., where current Illini commit Jeremiah Tilmon played for a season.
Groce would be a significant hire for Miller. He knows the Big Ten well, obviously, and is a good recruiter with ties to the state.
