This upcoming season of college basketball will be quite different for Cleveland State as the program is now coached by Dennis Gates. With only a few months away from the new season, he’s decided to add a former teammate of LeBron James to his coaching staff.
Gates was an assistant for Florida State before earning the head coaching job at Cleveland State. He’s in the process of building his staff in recent weeks, and on Wednesday, he went with an interesting hire.
According to college hoops insider Jon Rothstein, Cleveland State has hired Dru Joyce III as an assistant coach.
Joyce has strong ties to the state of Ohio, where he played basketball at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School. He was teammates with James during that time.
He’ll have the chance to remain close to home as a member of Cleveland State’s coaching staff.

Even though Joyce didn’t go on to have a star-studded career like James, he did play overseas for roughly a decade. In 2016, he became the all-time assists leader in Germany’s best professional league, Basketball Bundesliga.
Joyce is now following in the footsteps of his father, Dru Joyce II, who led St. Vincent–St. Mary to the national championship back in 2003.
Cleveland State is hoping that the combination of Gates and Joyce can help revitalize a program that hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
