With just under eight minutes left in their first round game against Dayton on Thursday, the Nevada Wolf Pack held a 17-point lead.

All signs pointed to head coach Steve Alford's team locking up an impressive win over the Flyers and moving on to the second round on Saturday.

Dayton stormed back, going on a run to take the lead with only a few seconds remaining and eventually winning the game.

The collapse from Nevada came on one of the biggest stages in all of college basketball, and Steve Alford's name is trending on social media for all the wrong reasons after the game.

"Congrats to Steve Alford & Co. on one of the all-time collapses in an NCAA Tournament game," said one fan.

"Don’t cry because it’s over, laugh because it’s Steve Alford," another fan said.

"FIRE STEVE ALFORD," one fan said. "I am heartbroken for my fellow Wolfpack fans. Best team I’ve watched at 5pm on a Thursday all season."

"Thank you Dayton for saving us from some kind of feel-good story about Steve Alford," another fan added.

"Steve Alford should be in prison and I say that as someone who bet on Dayton," said one fan.

"All-time choke job by Nevada there. Classic Steve Alford," one fan added.

The loss marks yet another year without an NCAA Tournament win for Alford, who has not won a game in the event since 2017 when he coached at UCLA.

Alford was fired from UCLA after he failed to produce for a program with essentially all of the resources one would need to succeed in the sport.

We'll see how long Alford can last at Nevada after Thursday afternoon's embarrassing collapse against Dayton.
