In 2018, the University of Maryland Baltimore County men’s basketball team shocked the nation when it took down No. 1 overall seed Virginia. The Retrievers immediately became the Cinderella of the tournament after taking down the Cavaliers in convincing fashion.
Not only did the team win, but UMBC crushed Virginia by a final score of 74-54. After taking down Virginia, the Retrievers failed to find their magic against Kansas State with a 50-43 loss.
Unfortunately for the UMBC faithful, their run of success came to an end a year to the day the Retrievers took down Virginia. UMBC took on Vermont in the America East Conference Tournament title game.
Vermont, who lost to UMBC in the America East title game in 2018, exacted its revenge this year.
The Catamounts dominated the Retrievers en route to a 66-49 victory. With the win,Vermont punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

The Catamounts would take on Kansas State in the East Region of the bracket, according to Lunardi.
The Cinderella story for UMBC officially started on this day one year ago. This year, it came to an unsatisfying end before the NCAA Tournament.
