We didn’t have to wait for March Madness to get the wildest buzzer-beater of the 2018-19 college basketball season, thanks to Missouri State.
The Bears faced Illinois State in a critical Missouri Valley Conference showdown this afternoon. The tight-knit battle ended in absurd fashion.
Up two with 7.8 seconds remaining, Illinois State had to inbound the ball under its own basket. The ensuing pass was tipped and nearly stolen, setting off a wild scramble for the loose ball.
After the ball was knocked and kicked around a bit, MSU’s Jarred Dixon picked it up and launched a desperation heave from midcourt that banked in off the glass for a game-winning three-pointer.
The shot gave the Bears a 66-65 victory and moved them into a three-way tie for second place behind Loyolla (Ill.) in the MVC, along with Illinois State and Drake.
Missouri State half-court buzzer beater to beat Illinois State 66-65 oh my.

That’s a heartbreaking defeat for Illinois State, but there is one consolation prize. Everything in the MVC will come down to the conference tournament.
Perhaps the Redbirds will have their chance at revenge during the postseason.
