Mock Draft Has Baker Mayfield Going No. 5 Overall To The Denver Broncos
Could Baker Mayfield go as high as No. 5 overall?
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, after an impressive Heisman Trophy-winning season, has skyrocketed up NFL Draft boards. Considered a late-round prospect this time last year, there are some who now believe that Mayfield could wind up going in the first round. Some even think he could go in the top 10 picks.
R.J. White over at CBS Sports put out his latest mock draft this week, and he has Mayfield going No. 5 overall to the Denver Broncos. White is predicting that Mayfield is the third quarterback taken - behind USC's Sam Darnold and UCLA's Josh Rosen. That means three of the top five picks overall would be quarterbacks. That's a lot.
Here's what White had to say about the Mayfield pick:
"I had Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson in this spot last week, but with the Broncos asking to work with Mayfield as referenced above, it makes too much sense to plug him in here. It's on Mayfield to alleviate any character concerns suitors may have, but if the Broncos come out of the Senior Bowl feeling like they have a handle on the Heisman winner and they like what they see, he shouldn't fall out of the top five."
White is referencing the report that dropped earlier this week - suggesting that the Broncos want Mayfield on their Senior Bowl team to get a better look.
White's mock has Darnold landing with the Cleveland Browns, with Rosen going to the New York Giants. He has Saquon Barkley and Minkah Fitzpatrick also being taken before Mayfield.
Mayfield, listed at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, isn't a physical specimen. But he's a proven winner, and his intangibles on the field are hard to overlook. He'll need to convince teams that his off-the-field behavior isn't a concern as well.
Where does Mayfield want to play? It seems he's open to anywhere. Mayfield addressed a recent report that he wants to play for Miami on Friday morning.
Mayfield threw for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns with just six interceptions in his final season, leading Oklahoma to a College Football Playoff berth.
