Baker Mayfield Will Be Allowed At NFL Combine Despite Arrest
Baker Mayfield will be allowed at the NFL Combine.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, according to a report from ESPN, will be allowed to participate in this year's NFL Combine. Mayfield, who won the Heisman Trophy this past season, was arrested for public intoxication last February. Some prior college stars, like former Oklahoma tailback Joe Mixon, were not allowed to participate in the event due to off-field behavior.
Dan Graziano reports that while the list of invitees has yet to be finalized, Mayfield is "expected" to be one of those included. Mayfield NFL Draft stock has soared after this past season.
While the list of players invited to Indianapolis for the combine in late February/early March has yet to be finalized, the expectation is that Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner, will be among those invited.
Mayfield was arrested last February on four charges - public intoxication, disorderly conduct, fleeing and resisting arrest. Video of his arrest surfaced a short time after.
Mayfield, in his senior season, put together an incredible campaign, finishing with 4,627 passing yards and 43 touchdowns against just six interceptions. He led the Sooners to a Big 12 title and an appearance in the College Football Playoff. OU fell to Georgia in the Rose Bowl in overtime.
Mayfield, against the Bulldogs, finished 23-of-35 for 287 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Sooners fell 54-48 in a classic.
The Sooners' signal-caller is easily one of the most intriguing NFL Draft prospects this year. Mayfield is a bit undersized and doesn't throw a great deep ball, but he's a winner.
Some, however, question his antics. Mayfield's arrest aside, there were a number of on-field incidents this past season - notably with Baylor and Kansas. One led to his head coach, Lincoln Riley, benching him to start his final home game.
Before the 2017 campaign kicked off, Mayfield was looked at as a late-round flier. Now, many are projecting he'll be drafted in the first round.
