Steve Spurrier On Jadeveon Clowney: "If He Doesn't Want To Play, He Doesn't Have To Play"
After South Carolina's battle against Kentucky, Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier was not shy about voicing his displeasure with star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney, who was announced with the starters, came out of the tunnel with no pads on and sat out the entire game due to pain from bruised ribs. He missed practice Thursday but was expected to be ready to play against the Wildcats.
However, right before the game, Clowney went to Spurrier and informed him that he'd be sitting out:
Spurrier then elaborated on the situation -- here's what he told ESPN:
"(If Clowney) wants to play, we will welcome him to come play for the team if he wants. But if he doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to play. Simple as that."
"He may not be able to play next week. I don't know. But we're not going to worry about it, I can assure you of that."
As you can see, the old ball coach was obviously not happy with Clowney's decision to sit out. Despite being favored heavily against the Wildcats. South Carolina allowed a late rally, and UK even pulled within six at one point. It was evident that the Gamecocks could have used the All-American.
South Carolina takes to the road next week to face off against Arkansas -- we'll see if Clowney is ready to go against the Razorbacks.
