He is known as the jokester on the Michigan State football team. His Twitter bio reads, “I punt footballs and tell bad jokes.” But Mike Sadler, who wears uniform number three as the starting punter for the Spartans, is also widely regarded as one of the smartest players on the squad - and possibly even a future Rhodes Scholar.
Being a student athlete has its perks, but it can also be very time consuming and limit the number of hours one can spend studying. That being said, Mike Sadler just recently finished his degree in applied engineering sciences - in three years. He also earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
He plans to start his PhD in economics this fall and may apply to become a Rhodes Scholar and play football at the same time. The scholarship would allow him to study a postgraduate degree in England.
Of course, Mike Sadler’s outstanding academic record is not the only thing he has going for him. He also has a shot in the NFL, being an All-Big Ten first team selection as a sophomore and averaging 43.4 years per punt. According to the Detroit Free Press, Sadler would love to potentially play pro football one day.
Mike Sadler’s success can be attributed to his ability to stay focused on schoolwork yet also let loose every once in a while and be a college kid. Whether he decides to pursue a career in economics or the NFL, one thing is certain; he has a bright future ahead of himself.
