Few players in NFL history have endured as much post-career adversity as former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly. He has been battling cancer of his mouth for years, and saw it resurface again in 2018. But on Friday, the much-maligned Hall of Fame quarterback got some of the best news he’s had in a while.
Kelly’s wife Jill announced on Instagram that the latest MRI showed that his mouth was clear of all cancer signs.
We finally got back the results from Jim’s recent MRI…CLEAN!
It took a bit longer than usual because of all the reconstruction Jim has had inside his mouth. They wanted to be certain that all was good…

We finally got back the results from Jim’s recent MRI…CLEAN! Thank GOD! It took a bit longer than usual because of all the reconstruction Jim has had inside his mouth. They wanted to be certain that all was good… This extra waiting has been a reminder for me. A reminder to remember the WHO and not the what. The bigger picture and not the present outcome. Although God is in all of it, I needed to be reminded (yet again) that this is not the end of the story. It’s a page. A chapter. It’s part of the greater story. Hope this reminds you that THIS (whatever your “this” is) is NOT the end of the story. Immeasurably more is always in store for those who hope in the Lord! AMEN!
Back in 2013, Kelly was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a form of cancer, located in his jaw. He had it treated and was declared cancer-free in 2014.
Unfortunately, ESPN reported in March 2018 that Kelly’s oral cancer had returned.
Kelly was a star at the University of Miami (FL) in the early 1980s before signing with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL in 1984.
He joined the Buffalo Bills in 1986 and along with Andre Reed quickly created one of the most dominant offenses in NFL history.
Under Kelly’s 11-year tenure at quarterback, the Buffalo Bills won six division titles, made eight playoff appearances, and famously appeared in four straight Super Bowls.
Kelly was a five-time Pro Bowl player and remains the Bills’ all-time leading passers in every major category.
