NFL’s Overtime Rules Getting Trashed After Chiefs-Patriots

“That’s why the coin flip was so key,” CBS’ lead NFL analyst, Tony Romo, said after the New England Patriots’ overtime win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

Unsurprisingly, Romo, who called a brilliant game for CBS, was 100 percent right after this evening’s Chiefs-Patriots’ overtime ending.

The Patriots got the ball in overtime and drove straight down the field for a touchdown, sending New England to the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady and Co. deserved to win, of course, but fans can’t help but criticize the NFL’s overtime rules after this one.

The NFL’s probable MVP, Patrick Mahomes, didn’t get to touch the football in overtime because his team lost the coin flip.

College football’s overtime rules, for instance, are much better. While it’s a little quirky – both teams getting the football at the 25-yard line, getting forced to go for 2 after a couple of OTs – it’s undoubtedly the more fair way to decide things.

Alas, the Patriots won tonight’s game, playing by the NFL’s rules, and they are off to the Super Bowl, where they will take on the Los Angeles Rams.

The Pats and the Rams will meet in two weeks in Atlanta.
