The Dallas Cowboys surpassed expectations this season with an NFC East title and a playoff win over the Seattle Seahawks. Despite losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round, head coach Jason Garrett maintained the coaching staff would remain the same heading into the 2019 season.

Just four days after saying offensive coordinator Scott Linehan would return in the same role next season, Garrett released a statement on Friday afternoon announcing the team parted ways with Linehan.

“This was not an easy decision because of how highly we regard Scott Linehan as a football coach and as a person. He and I had some really positive, substantive and open discussions which took place in the latter part of this week, and we ultimately agreed that it would be in the best interest of all of the parties involved if we were to make a change at the offensive coordinator position,” Garrett said in a statement.

Dallas finished 22nd in the league in total offense and points scored per game (21.2) during the regular season with Linehan in charge of the offense.

Linehhan served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2015-2019 after being promoted from the team’s passing game coordinator.

As the league shifts to high-flying offenses, it will be interesting to see where the Cowboys turn.
