Pittsburgh Steelers star wide receiver Antonio Brown has been taking a very unusual path to getting his way out of town. But it appears that there may be a rather fascinating method to Brown’s off-season madness.
According to Peter King of Football Morning in America, prospective teams are becoming increasingly reluctant to trade for Brown due to his social media posts and behavior. But King notes that Brown’s actions could be part of a calculated plan by Brown to force the Steelers to cut him.
ProFootballTalk noted that if Brown were traded, he would have to play out his current deal with a team he would have no control of signing with. But by forcing the Steelers to cut him, Brown could retake all of the control as a free agent, dictating the terms and the team he signs for.
If true, it’s a very bold strategy.
Brown was held out of the final game of the 2018 regular season due to a coach’s decision by Mike Tomlin.
He led the league in receiving touchdowns with 15, a career-high.
However, Brown was ultimately out-performed in terms of receptions, yards, yards per catch and catch rate by his Steelers teammate, JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Brown has seemingly been burning whatever bridges to Pittsburgh that he currently has, calling out the likes of star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the other team leaders.
