Back in 2012, an undefeated Notre Dame football team got a shot to play for a national title, and got blasted by Alabama 42-14.

If anything, that BCS title game was worse than the score indicated.

Notre Dame has probably been haunted by that one a bit over the last five years, even after the entire roster from that 2012 team has cycled through.

This season seemed like a good opportunity to erase the demons of the 2012 championship.

Notre Dame ran the table once again, and while the schedule did not wind up living up to its billing on paper, it was still filled with Power Five opponents.

That led to today's Cotton Bowl game against fellow undefeated club Clemson.

Unfortunately for Brian Kelly and Notre Dame, today's College Football Playoff game echoed the 2012 Alabama title game.

The Tigers thoroughly outlcassed the Fighting Irish, blasting Brian Kelly's team 30-3.

After the game, people have been passing around this unfortunate quote from the ND head coach.

Tonight, Clemson racked up 538 yards of offense against what was thought to be an elite defense, eclipsing the 529-yard effort of that 2012-13 Alabama team led by AJ McCarron and Eddie Lacy.

Notre Dame is undefeated, so it is hard to really argue that they shouldn't have been in this game, but it is a bad showing considering those who doubted the ability of the Fighting Irish to compete with a team like Clemson.
