Brian Kelly Says Everett Golson 'Rode The Bus' To Notre Dame's '12 Title Game Appearance, QB Competition Still Open

Everett Golson was the starting quarterback for the Notre Dame football team that appeared in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game.

Don't say the Fighting Irish's then-freshman quarterback led his team to the title contest, though.

Golson "rode the bus to the championship" according to coach Brian Kelly.

While that statement seems to be true--Golson threw for 2405 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012--it's a little surprising that Kelly would be so blunt about it.

Golson, who's back on the Notre Dame team following having missed the 2013 season, isn't a guarantee to be the starter this year, either.

Malik Zaire, a former four-star recruit in the 2013 class, is competing with Golson for the starting gig. Like his competitor, Zaire is known as a dual-threat.

Notre Dame opens the 2014 season Aug. 30 against Rice.
