Notre Dame is off to a very fast start in the 2021 recruiting class. The Fighting Irish just picked up their third commitment of that cycle, in four-star defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio.
He becomes the third player to commit to Brian Kelly's program from the 2021 class. Rubio will be a high school junior this fall, so there is a lot of time until he can sign to make things official.
He joins two fellow four-star players in the class. Quarterback Tyler Buchner opened things up in early March, setting the tone for the Notre Dame class. A few weeks later, he was joined by IMG Academy guard Greg Crippen.
Rubio is the first defensive player to commit to the Irish.
Gabriel Rubio announced his commitment to the Fighting Irish earlier this afternoon.
The St. Louis native tweeted out a note, along with graphics created by a few different recruiting publications for the event.
His full note:
"I was told at an early age that everyone's recruiting path is different. I've said from the beginning that I'm not trying to collect offers.....I'm focused on finding the one that is perfect for me.
"I would like to thank every teacher, coach, trainer, teammate and friend who has had a hand in my development both on and off the field. The person that I have become is a direct reflection of your effort and care. I would like to thank my family for investing their all into me! I pray that I can continue to make you all proud! Most importantly, I want to thank God for blessing me with both the gifts that I have discovered and the gifts that are yet to come!
"After much prayer and reflection I would like to announce that I am committing to The University of Notre Dame! #GoIrish"
With the commitment, Notre Dame jumps up to No. 2 in the class, behind only Miami which already has nine pledges in the cycle.
Rubio doesn't yet have a 247Sports composite score just yet, but the site's own rankings have him a a four-star. He's the No. 195 overall player in the class, and is ranked No. 15 among defensive tackles, and No. 4 in Missouri.
