#4 – USC 34, Notre Dame 31 (2005) – With both the Irish and Trojans in contention for the National Championship, this game was bound to have a great ending.
Notre Dame led 31-28 with just over a minute to go as USC lined up on its opponent’s 13 yard-line. After two Reggie Bush rushes got the Trojans a first down inside the ten, Matt Leinart scrambled to his left and tried to out-jump the Irish defense over the goal line. Leinart was stuffed, and because USC had no timeouts, the clock ran out. Notre Dame fans ran onto the field in celebration, creating a wild scene in South Bend.
As quickly as the fans had run onto the field, they were then ushered back off. The impact between Leinart and Notre Dame’s defenders had knocked the ball out of bounds with 7 seconds on the clock, enough time for either a game-tying field goal attempt or one last shot at the end zone.
USC wanted to end the game right then and there. If you haven’t heard of the controversial “Bush Push”, check it out below.
