Jaylon Smith Explains Why He Chose To Wear No. 54 For The Cowboys

Jaylon Smith is expected to miss all of next season as he continues to recover from the knee injury he suffered in the Fiesta Bowl. When the former Notre Dame star does take the field for the Dallas Cowboys, he'll be wearing a new number: 54.

Smith wore No. 9 during his three years in South Bend, but linebackers can't wear single digits in the NFL. Why did he choose 54? Well, as Smith explains on Twitter, the answer is pretty simple.

The No. 54 is a big one in Dallas franchise history. Hall of Fame defensive tackle Randy White wore the number for the 'Boys from 1975-88.
