Lou Holtz Believes Notre Dame Has A "Legitimate Chance" To Make The College Football Playoff

We may not see much of Lou Holtz on ESPN this coming college football season, but that doesn't mean he isn't still out there promoting his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With highly touted quarterback Malik Zaire taking the reins of the offense this season, Holtz believes that the Irish can be one of the four teams to make the College Football Playoffs.

"I do believe Notre Dame has a legitimate chance this year to be one of the Final Four," Holtz said Monday. "I think they are very talented. They return so many athletes. Defensively they are going to be much improved. I was very impressed with Malik Zaire against LSU."

Holtz goes on to site a schedule that features games with weak opponents like Temple, UMass, Virginia, and Wake Forest as a reason for optimism. Of course, the Irish will also need to put up wins against schools like Clemson, Georgia Tech, Texas, and USC, and almost definitely run the table to make the final four. We're not quite sure the Irish are edging out some of the nation's other top teams, but you'll be hard pressed to find Holtz as anything but optimistic heading into a Notre Dame football season.
