Navy transfer Alohi Gilman will suit up for the Fighting Irish this fall.
The Fighting Irish just landed a huge commitment from a talented defensive back.
After a visit to Notre Dame this past weekend, Alohi Gilman didn't waste time deliberating, and today he announced his intent to transfer to Notre Dame.
“I’m extremely grateful to be a part of the Notre Dame family,” Gilman said in a statement, per Irish Sports Daily. “I’m thankful to the coaching staff and the man above for not only believing in me, but also providing this opportunity. I’m excited for this next chapter in my journey.”
Gilman was reportedly leaning towards Utah, but the trip to South Bend apparently sealed the deal, and head coach Brian Kelly couldn't be happier.
“First of all, Alohi is a great fit here in terms of his character and also what he wants to achieve academically,” Kelly said, per Irish Sports Daily. “Clearly, that’s primary in our recruiting. Secondly, in terms of his football fit, we got a good look of him against us last season. He plays the style of safety we want in this program. Alohi’s a run-and-hit safety that fits perfectly in the Mike Elko defense.”
Gilman, a 6-foot, 200-pound safety, recorded 76 tackles and five pass breakups last season as a freshman at Navy. He tallied 12 of those tackles in last year's matchup versus Notre Dame.
