Notre Dame Ready To Burn Freshman Quarterback Brandon Wimbush's Redshirt

Sophomore DeShone Kizer, who led Notre Dame to a dramatic victory at Virginia last week, is set to take over as starting quarterback for the injured Malik Zaire, but he will not be the only one to take snaps at the position down the road. Notre Dame is set to burn the redshirt of true freshman Brandon Wimbush, a former four-star recruit out of New Jersey.

NBC Sports' Keith Arnold has more from Kelly on the decision:

“He’s going to have to play this year. So I haven’t decided yet, but he’s going to play this year,” Kelly said Tuesday. “Let’s try to get him as much experience as possible and we’re going to prepare him this week as if he’s going to play and go from there.

...

“He’s going to be in there and he’s going to be playing. I think we can add Brandon into the mix, and there are some things that he can do,” Kelly explained. “He’s got very good speed, he’s got a strong arm, he’s tough, and I think there are some things that could enhance our offense with him in the game as well.”

This weekend would be a pretty tough first game to thrust Wimbush into. The Irish host No. 14 Georgia Tech on Saturday.
