Notre Dame fans have gotten what they wanted.

Brian VanGorder, Notre Dame's defensive coordinator, has been fired, according to a report by FootballScoop.

The Fighting Irish (1-3) lost to Duke in embarrassing fashion on Saturday, falling 38-35, at home. Notre Dame allowed 50 points in a loss to Texas and 36 points in a loss to Notre Dame. Many Notre Dame fans were calling for VanGorder's firing after the loss.

There was also a petition created online calling for VanGorder's firing.

Brian VanGorder has consistently failed our Fighting Irish football team as the Defensive Coordinator. His NFL-style playbook is too complex and complicated for even our academic all stars to understand and execute. We have an explosive offense that is able to put up touchdown after touchdown, and then our uninspired defense comes in and allows our opponents to score even more. The only thing his “leadership” has inspired is our student section repeatedly chanting “FIRE VANGORDER.”

VanGorder, 57, has been Notre Dame's defensive coordinator since 2014.

Update: Notre Dame has confirmed the news.

Notre Dame hosts Syracuse next Saturday.
