Notre Dame Is The Biggest Beneficiary Of Saturday's Mayhem In The Big Ten

Penn State and Ohio State losing? Notre Dame fans are pumped.

Notre Dame was No. 3 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings that were unveiled last Tuesday, and Saturday, the Fighting Irish got more good news. With both Penn State and Ohio State losing, it's now very unlikely that the Big Ten champion - whichever team it is - gets in over Notre Dame.

Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State and Michigan now all have two losses. Wisconsin, the league's lone unbeaten team, has played a weak schedule. Even if the Badgers beat whichever team comes out of the Big Ten East, they'd be no lock to get in over the Fighting Irish, who have played a formidable schedule.

If the Big Ten is out of the way, it makes it much easier for the committee to pick an independent Notre Dame squad that finishes 11-1 for one of the four spots.

Notre Dame knocked off Wake Forest on Saturday to move to 8-1. Three more wins and they could be making their first College Football Playoff appearance.
