Notre Dame has filled the opening on its football staff. Lance Taylor is officially joining Brian Kelly’s staff to coach running backs.
The Fighting Irish were reportedly set to hire Taylor a few weeks ago. It took a while to finalize things, but the school officially announced the hire today.
He most recently coached wide receivers for the Carolina Panthers, but has done most of his work at the college level.
Most notably, he coached Christian McCaffrey as running backs coach at Stanford. He joined that staff in 2014, before leaving for the Panthers job in 2017. He was relieved of his duties in Carolina earlier this year.
Stanford has produced a number of impressive backs in recent years, and Kelly would undoubtedly like to bring some of that dynamic backfield play to South Bend.
Lance Taylor spoke about his excitement for the new job in Notre Dame’s release about him today.
“I’ve been blessed to work at some incredible places in my career, but Notre Dame is truly special,” said Taylor. “I’m honored and humbled to represent this incredible University as its running backs coach. I’d like to thank both Brian Kelly and Jack Swarbrick for this opportunity. I’m excited to get on campus, meet our players and get to work.”
Brian Kelly specifically cited his Stanford and NFL experience in addressing Taylor joining the staff.
“I was primarily looking for two things,” said Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Brian Kelly. “The candidate had to have the right skill set. He needs to be a great teacher and communicator. He also needs to fit Notre Dame, culturally, and Lance, most certainly, possesses all of those qualities. He recruited at an extremely high level during his time at Stanford, and he worked with the very best in the NFL. His ability to bring both of those experiences together makes him a perfect fit on our staff.”
Taylor was a walk-on running back at Alabama, eventually earning a scholarship under Mike Shula. He also worked as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban from 2007-08, before taking a job at Appalachian State the following year.
Taylor replaced Autry Denson, who left South Bend to become the head coach at FCS program Charleston Southern.
