Notre Dame basketball has had a year to forget. The Fighting Irish season isn’t over quite yet, though.
Mike Brey’s club outlasted Georgia Tech in its ACC Tournament opener on Tuesday, 78-71. They advanced for the right to face No. 7 seed Louisville tonight in Charlotte.
The Cardinals are 19-12, but finished the regular season on a serious slide. Louisville has lost four of its last five games.
The one win happened to come against Notre Dame, 75-61. To UL’s credit, it did play Virginia tough in the season finale, losing 73-68.
Right now, Louisville is a No. 7 seed in the latest ESPN bracketology, so it doesn’t seem to be in any real danger of missing the tournament. Notre Dame, at 14-18, needs to win the ACC to capture an automatic bid, for any hope of making it.
ESPN’s Basketball Power Index has Louisville as a big favorite to end Notre Dame’s season tonight.
BPI gives the Cardinals an 85.1-percent chance to pick up the win.
Given the recent game, there probably isn’t a team that Louisville would much rather play in this spot.
The winner of tonight’s game will face North Carolina in the ACC quarterfinal on Thursday. All ACC Tournament games are being played at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.
