Michigan just took a 3-0 lead against Notre Dame, thanks in large part to an incredibly foolish play from Fighting Irish linebacker Jonathan Jones.

Notre Dame had forced Michigan to punt deep in its own territory, and linebacker and ace special teamer Bo Bauer got through and got a hand on the kick. The ball rolled forward, but Notre Dame still would have had excellent field position.

However, Jones for some reason tried to fall on the ball and missed. That made it a live ball, and Michigan wound up recovering the loose pigskin at its own 33.

The Wolverines got a first down out of the wild play, and eventually turned their good fortune into a field goal and an early lead. Jones is actually lucky his teammates stopped Michigan inside the five-yard-line and prevented seven points.

Tonight's game in Ann Arbor is going to be a wild one, considering it is being played in driving rain. Playing smart and holding onto the ball will be paramount, so Notre Dame is going to want to avoid further mistakes like the one Jones made.
