The College Football Playoff kicked off with a battle between No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. Through nearly three quarters of play, it's been all Clemson and freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence's connection with fellow freshman Justyn Ross.
Lawrence and Ross have connected six times for 148 yards and two touchdowns on the night. That's been the driving force for Clemson's success tonight as the running game has been all but stopped by the Notre Dame defensive front.
It's a tough game to watch for Notre Dame fans. The Fighting Irish have struggled on offense and the frustration is showing on head coach Brian Kelly's face.
ESPN's cameras caught a dejected Kelly on the sideline.
The last time Notre Dame played a game of this magnitude, it ended in an absolute whooping at the hands of Alabama in the 2012 title game.
Notre Dame fans are searching for a glimmer of hope to hold on to over the final 20 minutes of the game.
